Sept.20 - Oct. 4, 2006 . . .
The following articles are accounts of the first trip we took for the purpose of developing the SightLines website content.
The trip was fairly ambitious in that, in a fairly short time, it included 4 large states, covered 3078 miles, ranged in elevation between -282 ft and 10058 ft, took us to 4 national parks (Grand Canyon, Zion, Death Valley, Yosemite), one national monument (Grand Staircase Escalante), one Navajo tribal park (Monument Valley), one national recreation area (Glen Canyon), 5 national forests (Coconino, Kaibab, Inyo, Sierra, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest), one State Historical Park (Bodie, CA) and one national natural landmark (Trona Pinnacles).
We deviated very little from our scheduled itinerary and had the feeling that we were, to some extent, prisoners of it. There were many places where we would like to have stayed longer, waited for better light, a different time of day or a different weather condition, if only the schedule had permitted it. But, it didn't. Of course, we knew this going in, and we felt like butterflies, going from flower to flower sucking a bit of nectar from each and then moving on to the next.
I highly recommend this kind of trip as a way to get a quick, overall impression of a large area, but realize that you'll miss many of the tasty little details that are always the reward of more concentrated exploration.
As I said, this was the first of many of such trips for us. We'll learn from our experiences and we'll share them with you, here.
